USSR Space Life Sciences Digest, issue 8

This is the eighth issue of NASA's USSR Space Life Sciences Digest. It contains abstracts of 48 papers recently published in Russian language periodicals and bound collections and of 10 new Soviet monographs. Selected abstracts are illustrated with figures and tables. Additional features include reviews of two Russian books on radiobiology and a description of the latest meeting of an international working group on remote sensing of the Earth. Information about English translations of Soviet materials available to readers is provided. The topics covered in this issue have been identified as relevant to 33 areas of aerospace medicine and space biology. The NASA Suborbital Program: A status review

The status of the NASA suborbital program is reviewed and its importance to astrophysical and geophysical programs is assessed. A survey of past scientific and developmental accomplishments, an examination of the trends in program costs, and an analysis of current and future program roles are included. The technical disciplines examined are primarily those of astronomy/astrophysics/solar physics and magnetospheric/ionospheric/ atmospheric physics

Domestic Relations - Separation Agreements: Effect of Resumed Marital Relations

Since 1890, the settled law of North Carolina has been that the resumption of marital relations will void a separation agreement to the extent that such an agreement remains executory. However, the definition of resumption of marital relations has remained uncertain. The North Carolina Supreme Court has held that a husband and wife resuming cohabitation and holding themselves out as living together as man and wife had resumed the marital relationship even without their engaging in sexual intercourse. The North Carolina Court of Appeals has held that resumption of sexual activity between estranged spouses does not void a separation agreement without a finding that both parties intended to resume marital relations. In Murphy v. Murphy the North Carolina Supreme Court rejected the court of appeals\u27 requirement of intent and held that sexual intercourse between a husband and wife after the execution of a separation agreement avoids the contract. \u27 This note will examine the rationale behind and implications of the Murphy decision

A History of the Arkansas Assemblies of God 1908-1968

Religious freedom has played an important role in the nation and state. Because of the freedom guaranteed by the United States Constitution, a colorful array of denominations and sects have arisen. One group, the Pentecostals, have been called the \u27\u27Third force in Protestantism. Of this group the Assemblies of God are the largest, not only nationally and world-wide, but also in Arkansas. In fact, the Arkansas District of the Assemblies of God is the largest district per capital of any of the Assemblies of God Districts in the United States. For some reason a study on the Arkansas Assemblies of God has been neglected. Two main reasons have been advanced: on the one hand some of the early leaders would have frowned upon an attempt because they were against hero worship , and on the other hand there was an ardent expectation of Christ\u27s second coming and, therefore, no history was needed. there is no evidence that a systematic study of the Arkansas Assemblies of God has ever been attempted. Consequently, much of the history of the movement remains in the memory of a few old timers or scattered in materials often out of print. The present study has been concerned with the compiling of scattered materials on the Arkansas District of the Assemblies of God and the collecting of the materials into a readable, documentary account. The purpose of this paper has been not a plea for Pentecostals, but an account of the trends, issues, and policies of the Arkansas Assemblies of God. The study has concentrated on (1) the beginnings; (2) the dissent; (3) the organization of the district; and (4) the relation of the district to the central organization

The WCSAR telerobotics test bed

Component technologies for use in telerobotic systems for space are being developed. As part of this effort, a test bed was established in which these technologies can be verified and integrated into telerobotic systems. The facility consists of two slave industrial robots, an articulated master arm controller, a cartesian coordinate master arm controller, and a variety of sensors, displays and stimulators for feedback to human operators. The controller of one of the slave robots remains in its commercial state, while the controller of the other robot has been replaced with a new controller that achieves high-performance in telerobotic operating modes. A dexterous slave hand which consists of two fingers and a thumb is being developed, along with a number of force-reflecting and non-force reflecting master hands, wrists and arms. A tactile sensing finger tip based on piezo-film technology has been developed, along with tactile stimulators and CAD-based displays for sensory feedback and sensory substitution. The telerobotics test bed and its component technologies are described, as well as the integration of these component technologies into telerobotic systems, and their performance in conjunction with human operators

USSR Space Life Sciences Digest, issue 3

This is the third issue of NASA's USSR Space Life Sciences Digest. Abstracts are included for 46 Soviet periodical articles in 20 areas of aerospace medicine and space biology and published in Russian during the second third of 1985. Selected articles are illustrated with figures and tables from the original. In addition, translated introductions and tables of contents for seven Russian books on six topics related to NASA's life science concerns are presented.
